Americans have become smarter and more sophisticated about their health. Today they are apt to visit doctors regularly for checkups and keep abreast of the latest advances in medicine. Too, they tend to be better prepared for emergencies, keeping first aid kits strategically located around the home and even in the car. There was a time when people tended to feel helpless when it came to their health but now they are empowered.
Except, it seems, when it comes to tending to an eye emergency. Often people are unaware that this is even possible. They jump into panic mode at the time when they need to be cool, calm and collected. Let’s consider what types of eye emergencies could occur and the type of response that would be best.
When you create that emergency preparedness kit, include an extra set of glasses for everyone who may wear them in your household. The ability to see properly may save your life in the event of a fire, hurricane, tornado or other emergency.
Other eye injuries that are common include abrasions and lacerations to the eyeball, slivers of glass, metal or other substances in the eye, and chemical burns or flashes. In each of these instances, first be careful not to rub the eye, even though that is instinctively what a person will want to do. Next, flush the eye with large amounts of water unless there is a foreign object protruding from the eye. In that case do NOT remove it but seek immediate medical help. If you suffer a chemical burn, once again flush the eye with lots of water and get to a doctor as quickly as possible.
Another type of problem that can occur is a blow to the eye. If this occurs, apply a cold compress or bag of ice without putting pressure on the compress or the eye, then seek medical attention.
Your eyesight is a precious gift. There are many types of incidents that can impair it. Always be on guard and wear safety glasses if the situation calls for it. Always be aware of your surroundings.
