A cataract is the development of cloudiness behind the iris and pupil of the eye. It forms in the eye’s natural lens and has been deemed the leading cause of blindness around the world. Surprisingly, even here in the United States, 22 million Americans are affected by some type and severity of cataracts.
Cataracts often start off small. They may appear to be only slightly blurred vision. It may present as an increasing glare from light sources that had not been particularly problematic in the past, such as lamps or even outdoor light. Conversely, some colors may appear less brilliant. Ultimately, different types of cataracts will affect your vision differently. But all will require optometry intervention at some point.
Causes of cataracts are varied. Advanced aging definitely increases the risk of cataracts. But, other factors can include
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Alcohol
- Genealogy
- Prior eye surgeries
- Hormone replacement drugs
- Certain medications to treat comorbid ailments
There is conflicting evidence in the research regarding the issue of whether or not cataracts can be prevented. However, some studies point out that certain types of foods, supplements and nutrients at least support eye health – as a measure of reducing the risk for cataracts. For example, one longitudinal study reported that higher dietary intakes of Vitamin E, along with carotenoids in natural food and supplements, actually decreased the risk for cataracts significantly. Specific food sources for these substances include kale, almonds, green leafy vegetables, spinach and sunflower seeds.
Still other studies have pointed to Vitamin C as a retardant for cataracts, as well as Omega 3 fatty acids. None of this should be too surprising because nutrition is tied directly to good health. When you are taking care of yourself by eating right, it is bound to have a positive effect on your eyesight as well.
Experts also suggest that when outdoors always wear sunglasses that offer 100% UV ray protection for your eyes.
There is a remedy for cataracts if they do appear – cataract surgery. This is a highly successful way to restore your vision. Most people are unaware that cataract surgery is the most frequently performed medical procedure in the United States. It often results in nearly wholly restored vision for many patients.
