There is conflicting evidence in the research regarding the issue of whether or not cataracts can be prevented. However, some studies point out that certain types of foods, supplements and nutrients at least support eye health – as a measure of reducing the risk for cataracts. For example, one longitudinal study reported that higher dietary intakes of Vitamin E, along with carotenoids in natural food and supplements, actually decreased the risk for cataracts significantly. Specific food sources for these substances include kale, almonds, green leafy vegetables, spinach and sunflower seeds.

Still other studies have pointed to Vitamin C as a retardant for cataracts, as well as Omega 3 fatty acids. None of this should be too surprising because nutrition is tied directly to good health.
