How much time do you spend on a computer or smart phone every day? According to Nielsen, the average adults spends as much as 12 hours a day in front of TVs and computers. Unfortunately, our digital devices emit “blue light,” which is a low wave length, high energy light that can potentially damage eyes in the long term.
While avoiding digital devices entirely is probably not a realistic solution, there are some ways you can help to protect your eyes against blue light damage:
1. If you spend long hours working in front of computers, consider buying a pair of computer glasses. Their yellow-tinted lenses can help block harmful blue light and minimize eye strain.
2. Apply a special screen filter to the front of your smart phone. These filters are inexpensive, and absorb much of the blue light that these devices emit.
3. The simplest way to protect your eyes is to give them a rest. Be sure to take breaks from the screen and utilize the 20-20-20 rule: For every 20 minutes looking at a screen, take a break to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
